OneTV Connect vs IPTV Smarters: which to choose on Apple TV

A side-by-side breakdown across focus engine, EPG, Sport Centre, Plex, Trakt, themes and 4K HEVC playback — with screenshots from both apps on tvOS.

IPTV Smarters Pro is the most-installed IPTV app on Apple TV. OneTV Connect is the newcomer that ships native Plex, Trakt and Sport Centre. We've spent the past month using both side by side on a third-gen Apple TV 4K with the same playlist — here's where each app shines, and which one we'd recommend.

Focus engine and tvOS feel

This is where Apple-first matters most. IPTV Smarters Pro uses a cross-platform UI that works but feels port-y: the focus ring is the default tvOS one, sometimes lost behind animations, and the Glass-style detail pages don't blur the wallpaper. OneTV Connect is built natively in SwiftUI, with custom focus styles and bitmap pre-rendering for category grids — you'll feel the difference within seconds of using either app.

Feature deltas that matter

Both apps cover M3U, Xtream Codes and basic EPG. Beyond that, OneTV Connect adds:

  • Native Plex integration with home rails
  • Sport Centre with live scores, lineups, push notifications across 50+ leagues
  • Trakt scrobbling + watchlist sync
  • Skip intro / outro detection
  • Triple player engine (MPV, VLC, KSPlayer) with automatic failover
  • iCloud sync for playlists, favorites, watchlist, EPG sources
  • Custom theme editor with live preview

IPTV Smarters Pro keeps things focused on live IPTV with VOD — which works for many users, and is fine if you don't need any of the integrations above.

Performance and codec support

On 4K HEVC 50fps streams (a common French and UK broadcaster format), IPTV Smarters Pro stuttered on our Apple TV 4K (3rd gen). OneTV Connect uses KSPlayer with `videotoolbox-copy` enabled — the same stream plays smoothly, with hardware decoding confirmed in the player overlay. For HLS / live TS streams, both apps handle reconnect-on-EOF gracefully.

Pricing comparison

IPTV Smarters Pro is a one-time purchase (around $5–10 depending on the region). OneTV Connect is free to download with optional Pro: $2.99 / month, $29.99 / year, or $49.99 lifetime. Free users get full IPTV playback; Pro unlocks the integrations and the multi-engine player. If you only need basic IPTV, IPTV Smarters Pro is cheaper. If you want Plex, Sport Centre, Trakt or themes, OneTV Connect is the only option in the App Store.

Verdict: which to pick

Pick IPTV Smarters Pro if you want a no-frills IPTV player and you don't care about Plex, Sport, Trakt or themes — and you'd rather pay once than subscribe.

Pick OneTV Connect if you watch sport, run a Plex server, use Trakt, care about Apple TV polish, or watch 4K HEVC streams. The free tier is generous enough to try the app risk-free; Pro pays for itself the first time Sport Centre tells you which channel a goal just happened on.

Either way, both apps respect your data and never re-stream content — they're players, not providers. Whichever you pick, you keep your own playlists and EPG sources.
